Wine Whisperers

Meeting 4: 10th January

Alsace

Alsace wine region is located in the eastern part of France on the border with Germany and Switzerland. To the west, the Alsace region has Champagne and Burgundy wine regions and to the south, Jura and Savoie. Located on the borders of Switzerland and Germany, the Alsace wine region benefits from an ideal location in the heart of Europe. This also had an influence on the heritage, gastronomy, and even on the wines of Alsace. It is a great mix of German and French culture. It also benefits from a geography and terroir that creates a unique micro-climate.

The white wines of Alsace are famous, including haunting, rose-petal-scented gewurztraminer, captivatingly complex riesling and indulgently textured pinot blanc. Its dessert wines are among the finest on the planet, while red wines from pinot noir are becoming increasingly successful too, and will appeal to lovers of red Burgundy.

  • Key grapes: Riesling, gewurztraminer, muscat, pinot gris, pinot noir.

  • Key styles: Dry but aromatic white wines, lighter red wines, sweet wines (Vendange Tardive and Sélection de Grains Nobles), sparkling wines (Crémant d’Alsace).

An Alsace label is one of the easiest to read. In contrast to other parts of France where wines take their name from their regions of production, Alsace wines are helpfully labelled by grape variety and, with the exception of a tiny proportion of pinot noir, most of the production is white. The appellation system is relatively simple too, with wines classified either as AC Vin d’Alsace, Alsace grand cru, or, in the case of sparkling wines, AC Crémant d’Alsace.

Alsace is also famous for blends of different varieties, which make pleasing, aromatic everyday wines, taking a little something from each of the component grapes. At the other end of the scale, there are 50 named grand-cru sites, restricted in labelling terms, to wines made only from the four “noble” grape varieties, riesling, muscat, pinot gris and gewurztraminer. But a curious aspect of Alsace wine labelling, is that in many cases, the producer’s name and branding are considered to be of higher importance than the vineyard of origin.

Chosen by Majestic Alsace White 2023

A blend of Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Muscat – this a deliciously refreshing wine, perfect for al fresco occasions. The mosaic of soils and terroir in Alsace creates some of the most unique winegrowing conditions in the world. Sheltered from oceanic influence by the Vosges Mountains, the Alsace wine region enjoys practically the lowest rainfall in France. These optimal weather conditions, along with a nice and cool fall season, allow the grapes to ripen slowly and to develop an amazing complexity of aromas. Beautifully fresh and elegant, this wine is packed with crisp flavours of lemon, peach and pineapple. A great pairing for the bitterness of goats cheese dishes.

Domaines Schlumberger ‘Spiegel’ Pinot Gris Grand Cru 2021/22

Domaines Schlumberger sets the standard for quality in Alsace. Now in its seventh generation of family ownership, the estate lies on a steep, picturesque hillside where the vineyards reach altitudes of almost 400 metres. Spiegel is one of four Grand Cru spots in this part of Alsace, and it’s one of the best Pinot Gris sites in the region. Here, the grapes ripen perfectly under the sun while retaining a balancing freshness and acidity – making for an opulent, complex and elegant wine. Discover rich notes of ripe yellow plum, apricot, quince, orange blossom and honey, with a silky, full-bodied texture courtesy of eight months’ careful lees ageing. It has a luxurious touch of sweetness, so try it with soft, creamy cheeses or something a little exotic like apricot-stuffed pork.

Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr Kuhlmann-Platz 'Cuvée Prestige' Pinot Noir 2022/2023

Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr began in Alsace, on the German border of France, in 1954. Their aim was to restore the region’s winemaking industry after it was badly damaged by the German occupation in World War Two. Today, this cooperative consists of 110 members, and it’s safe to say they’ve smashed their initial target.

This is a light and fresh Pinot Noir, with flavours of cherry, strawberry, sweet spices and cedar. Try it with turkey or chicken.

Argentina

The vineyards of Argentina covers 220 000 hectares in different regions. Argentina is the fifth largest wine producer in the world after Italy, France, Spain and the USA. The main producing region is the province of Mendoza producing more than 60% of the Argentinian wine, followed by the provinces of San Juan and La Rioja, and then Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, La Pampa and Rio Negro.

Thanks to the altitude and the winds generated by the proximity of the Andes mountain range, the weather conditions generally lead to good draining conditions for the vineyards.

The first vineyard was established by father Juan Cedrón in 1556 at Santiago del Estero.

Today, the main grape varieties cultivated are Malbec, Bonarda, Pedro Giménez, Torrontés and then Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Merlot, Pinot noir, Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, Lambrusco, Nebbiolo, Raboso, Sangiovese, Sauvignon blanc, Chenin blanc, Semillon, Riesling and Viognier.

Mendoza Wine Region

Mendoza is Argentina’s largest wine region with the most wineries. If you’ve had Argentinian wine, then chances are you tasted something from Mendoza. In terms of importance, it’s on the top of the list because it’s the biggest wine region in the entire country!

  • Mendoza is home to 75% of the vineyards in Argentina.

  • Malbec is 26% of Mendoza production

  • Malbec from Mendoza accounts for: 19.52% of the total cultivated surface in Argentina.

  • 63% of all wine made in Mendoza is Red Wine

  • There is more Malbec planted in Mendoza than anywhere else in the world.

Catena Chardonnay 2022/2023 Mendoza

Catena is one of the biggest names in Mendoza. Nicolás Catena is a former Decanter Man of the Year and the winery, known as Catena Zapata, is largely responsible for putting Argentinian wine on the world map.

It’s now in the expert hands of his daughter, Laura and she’s living up to the family’s widespread acclaim. Her talent shows in this ripe Chardonnay. It’s rich and tropical, with flavours of apple, pear, butter and sweet spices. Try it with roast chicken.

Beefsteak Club Malbec 2022/2023 Mendoza

Argentina is a paradise for steak and Malbec lovers – and no one does them better. This wine is a tribute to the dining clubs of the 18th and 19th centuries, which celebrated steak as a symbol of prosperity. The grapes come from high-altitude vineyards in some of Mendoza’s best sites, so you can expect delicious flavour in every glassful. It’s juicy and smooth with ripe black-fruit notes. Oak ageing gives it lush vanilla and gently spiced aromas – all balanced by a delicious freshness. It’s a real crowd pleaser and, naturally, incredible with steak. In 2022, this wine won an IWC award for the 2021 vintage.

Catena Malbec 2021/22, Mendoza

Nicolás Catena was the first South American winemaker to ever be named ‘Decanter’s Man of the Year’. No wonder when he pioneered high-altitude Malbec in the Argentine Andes. Before that, Argentina was only seen as a producer of cheap bulk wine. The Catena’s changed all that. Nicolás’ great-grandfather, Nicola, planted his first Malbec vines in 1902. Since then, the family have amassed a collection of Malbec varietals which are exclusive to them. It makes the Catena’s wines completely distinct from other Argentine Malbecs. Bold. Ripe. Fruity. It’s a big wine with lots of flavour – and a lovely plush texture. It’s crying out for grilled meats – think barbecued steak with a punchy chimichurri sauce. Delicious.
